City MOUANKO (Sanaga Maritime Subdivision)

Mouanko is an subdivision located in the Sanaga Maritime Division, Littoral Region of Cameroon.
The commune of Mouanko was created in 1977. It covers an area of 1378 Km². Mouanko is located between 9°35 to 9°40 and 10°5 East longitude and 3°15 to 3°45 North latitude.
Mouanko is limited :
- to the North by the district of Dizangue,
- to the North-West by the district of Douala 6éme (Manoka),
- to the North-East, to the East and to the South-East by that of Edéa I,
- to the West and South by the department of Wouri,
- to the South-West by the Atlantic Ocean.
The climate of the commune of Mouanko is equatorial with 4 seasons:
- a long dry season from mid-November to mid-April,
- a short rainy season from mid-April to mid-June,
- a short dry season from mid-June to mid-August,
- a long rainy season from mid-August to mid-November.
Mouanko is flat, with a small amount of dry land, while the majority of the area is made up of flooded land and swampy areas.
Due to its position on the Atlantic Ocean, the town of Mouanko was the main trading post for the slave trade, a sort of Goree Island for Cameroon.
The town of Mouanko is made up of two main rivers:
- The Sanaga River which flows into the sea here
- An arm of the Atlantic Ocean with natural beaches of rare beauty
The town of Mouanko is not as well known as the other Cameroonian seaside destinations such as Kribi and Limbe. However, it is a real tourist jewel in Cameroon. Its impressive landscape and its spendid sites make this city a marvel which, pending its promotion, is an ideal environment for ecotourism. The development of these sites would make Mouanko and its surroundings a dream tourist destination.
Mouanko has the very first church (Marienberg Church) built by the Germans in Cameroon. This church has kept its original architectural beauty to this day.
Yôyo beach is a place considered unique in the whole Central African sub-region. It is a beautiful, impressive place with a long line of golden white sand.
Monkey Island, a small paradise park where many monkeys, chimpanzees and gorillas live together. The only place in the country where visitors can come into direct contact with these animals.
The forest in Mouanko is mainly of secondary type due to its intense exploitation by logging companies, but there are still areas of virgin forest outside the residential areas, swampy areas and some lowlands suitable for market gardening.
It must be recognised that the main activity of the region's populations for many generations has been fishing in all its forms. This activity occupies nearly 90% of the active population of the commune.
The Commune of Mouanko is crossed by the Sanaga, the longest river in Cameroon, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean. This opening of the commune to the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the numerous rivers and lakes available in the commune of Maounko, favour the practice of fishing.
